Put together an important and just cause.. Add an angry and united community of the people. Throw in many big mouths ;D..and all sorts of differences overlooked for a singular immediate goal.... Into the stew goes the powers that be who were recognized as NOT being the enemy but merely deaf or somewhat hard of hearing.. To all these ingredients add a pinch of rationality and a teaspoon of not resorting to nuclear war before a very realistic accommodation could be worked out.. MIX it ALL TOGETHER and what have you GOT? ? Hmmm Hmmm A SAGE DROP IN ROOM AND A CONTINUED ACTIVE SAGE PRESENCE AT THE NYC LGBT COMMUNITY CENTER!!! THE PEOPLE UNITED CAN NEVER BE DIVIDED!!! Everyone is a winner in this "People Stew"... SAGE-THE LGBT CENTER-THE PEOPLE of the SAGE COMMUNITY.. CONGRATULATIONS to all that stood up spoke up and fought the just fight and the Sage leadership that listened and heard what was said without bias.. EVERYONE should be VERY PROUD of the way this situation was handled and the WIN WIN outcome that resulted!!! JH

It's extremely gratifying to have been really 'heard'. Kudos to Sage leadership and Jerry.
I have an attitude about this issue. As far as I'm concerned, now that we have 305 SAGE space, the LGBT center should be begging us to remain a presence at the center. Without us there is no LGBT center, there is no Stonewall, there is no national movement.

The lion's share of the credit goes to Jerry, of course. Masterful job top to bottom. If I ever run for president or dog catcher Jerry is the guy I want for campaign manager. Bravo!

Thank you Jerry and others who spoke up but don't trust SAGE. Tom refused to read my comments at the last meeting - I was out of town. He said it was detrimental to SAGE. In my comments, I suggested that SAGE members not pay dues, volunteer or donate money for six months. At that time, we will reevaluate SAGE. I knew they would provide a room for us but don't be stupid. This isn't the first first time that SAGE has made decisions that have hurt SAGE members. If we are not vigilant and make them work for us, SAGE will "F..K Us Over" again and again!!!

Hi Carol.. First I should have suggested that you publish your letter on this board before the meeting last Thursday I didn't think of that and I'm sorry because I want all opinions expressed here with NO censorship of any kind. Let me tell you how I feel about things at this point...the meeting last Thursday was a very productive and heartfelt airing of many issues that the membership has with Sage.
It opened up with Micheal Adams seriously confirming that he had not understood the importance that Sage's presence at the LGBT Center meant to so many of us..he went on to take personal responsibility for the lack of communication that has existed...and said he was committed to correct that situation.
He then pretty much pledged to do everything possible to keep a drop in room at the Center...including fund raising for that purpose and promised a new room will be acquired when the current room is no longer available.
The truth is that I went into that meeting prepared for a fight but the wind was taken out of my sails when basically everything we were fighting for was agreed to.
For me to have been belligerent at that point would have done nothing but expose me and the community as "sore winners"!
My guess is that Tom felt it would have been counter productive at that point to read your letter since we seemed to have arrived at a very reasonable accommodation.
I do hope Tom posts here on the board to respond since you mentioned him and I don't want to be responsible for assuming his motive for not reading your letter.
I will say virtually everyone came away from that meeting with a renewed feeling of goodwill and community..even the most suspicious amongst us seem to be pleased with the way things went.
Carol..you are a true fighter and my respect for you and your opinions are immense...again I feel really bad I did not suggest that you post your letter on this board before the meeting...and certainly you are free to post it now. I do feel though if you had been at the meeting you might have understood why the reading of the letter might have been out of place considering the direction the meeting had gone in towards reaching an amicable accommodation.
We will of certainly remain vigilant to keep Sage to their word..and there will be several community meetings soon to talk over future details..This board always stands ready to hear any and all opinions on where we go from here. JH
